How Stripe fees break down

Stripe's standard online rate for US cards is 2.9% of the transaction plus a fixed $0.30 per charge. On a $100 payment the percentage slice is $2.90 and the fixed slice is $0.30, for a total fee of $3.20 and a net deposit of $96.80. The fixed $0.30 hurts small tickets most: on a $5 charge the fee is $0.45, nearly 9% of the payment. That is why Stripe offers a micropayment rate of 5% plus $0.05, available on request for merchants with high small-ticket volume. It trades a higher percentage for a much lower fixed fee. The crossover sits near $11.90, so below that amount micropayments cost less, above it the standard rate wins, and at exactly $5 the standard fee is $0.45 while micropayments cost $0.30.

International cards add another 1.5% on top of the standard rate, and if Stripe converts the currency there is a further 1% conversion fee. A $100 charge on a foreign card converted to USD costs 2.9% plus 1.5% plus 1% plus $0.30, or $5.70, leaving $94.30. Billing customers in their local currency removes the conversion slice but keeps the international surcharge.

Card type and presentation change the numbers. Amex cards billed online use the same 2.9% plus $0.30 as Visa and Mastercard, and Stripe does not add an Amex surcharge domestically. What changes the rate is how the card is presented: in-person chip or tap payments run about 2.7% plus $0.05, while manually keyed-in card-not-present payments run higher, around 3.4% plus $0.30. Rates also vary by country and pricing can change, so treat this calculator as an estimate and confirm the current rates in your Stripe dashboard before pricing decisions.
